Description

LaMotte alkalinity test kits can be used to measure phenolphthalein (P) alkalinity, total (T) alkalinity or both.  Each kit uses a different test method and those methods are outlined below.  There are 5 kits to choose from (see specifications tab below for detail).

What is a titration?
Titrimetric tests are  used to determine the concentration of a substance in a solution.  After the sample solution is treated with an indicator, a titrant is gradually added until a colour change indicates a completed reaction.  Our kits use a variety of different titration methods, including the direct reading tirator, dropper pipette or dropper bottle method.

Direct reading titrator method
The direct reading titrator is a 1.0 mL microburet calibrated to allow direct reading of the test result.  Each titrator has a specific range, but may be refilled to test higher concentrations.

Dropper pipette method
The drop count test uses a pipette to provide fast, reliable measurements in the field.  The number of drops used to obtain a colour change is multiplied by a given factor to produce the test result.

Dropper bottle

The dropper bottle test uses bottle tips which deliver a consistent standard drop size to add titrant to the sample.  As with the drop count test, the number of drops used to complete the reaction is multiplied by a given equivalence factor to determine the concentration.
